Flushing your water heater is an essential part of yearly home maintenance that helps ensure efficiency, extends the life of the unit, and prevents costly repairs. Over time, sediment builds up in the tank, which can reduce performance and even cause damage. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it safely and effectively.
Before flushing the water heater, turn the Gas Control valve on a natural gas water heater to the “Pilot” position or the lowest temperature setting. For an electric water heater, shut off power at the circuit breaker or pull the cord out of the electric socket to avoid damaging the heater if it operates without water. Next, turn off the cold water source by locating and closing the cold water valve at the top of the tank to stop new water from entering. To relieve system pressure and allow air into the system as it drains, open a nearby hot water tap, such as a sink or bathtub.
During the flushing process, secure a drain outlet by attaching a garden hose to the spigot at the bottom of the tank and run the hose to a safe drainage area. Then, open the spigot and allow the tank to drain completely—take caution, as the water may still be hot. If the water remains discolored, the tank may need to be fully emptied to remove sediment effectively. Once the tank is empty, briefly turn the cold water valve back on for a minute or two to stir up and flush out any remaining sediment. Repeat this process until the water runs clear.
After flushing is complete, close the spigot and remove the hose. Turn the cold water supply back on to let the tank fill. Leave the hot outlet open of the faucet or tub to allow air to come out of the tank, as it may cause a sputter when water is filling up and air is let out. Do not be alarmed—this is normal. Once the tank is full, restore power or gas to the water heater and set the thermostat to the desired temperature.
